June 2024

In June 2024, the Hamilton CMA saw an increase of 0.23% into the population, with a total of 698,800 persons. From this, the labour force increased by 0.5% to 461,600 persons (looking for work or employed). Employment increased minimally by 2%, whereas unemployment greatly increased by 5.0% to 33,700 unemployed persons. More people were looking to find work as the participation rate increased by 0.3% to 66.1%, and the unemployment rate by 0.3%, as well, to 7.3%. There were no changes to the employment rate, which sat at 61.2%.

Unemployment

Unemployment was high in June, as the rate inched up by 0.3% to 7.3%, and the unemployed population increased by 5% to 33,700. For three consecutive months now, the Hamilton CMA has had an increasing unemployment rate, going from 6.6% in April, 7% in May; and 7.3% in June. Compared to the national unemployment rate of 6.3%, the Hamilton CMA now has a high unemployment rate (which is above 6%).

Population Growth

In the first quarter of 2024, the Hamilton CMA has increased gradual population growth, at an average of 0.2% per month. Population growth has increased significantly for Canada, mainly headed by immigration trends. In 2023, there were 471,771 permanent immigrants and further 804,901 non-permanent residents added to the country’s population. With increases in immigration mean more persons looking to find employment.

Industries

Looking at industry changes from May to June 2024, the Hamilton CMA saw their information, Culture and Recreation sector increase by 6% in employment. Following was Business, Building and other Support Services with an increase of 5.5% to industrial employment; and Wholesale and Retail Trade with a 5% increase. In general, the Hamilton CMA saw their goods-producing sector increase by 2% in employment. The top declining industries in regards to employment was, first, Utilities with a decline of 10%, followed by Transportation and Warehousing (-9.25%) and Other Services (-9.1%).

Occupations

From Workforce Planning Hamilton’s Job Board, the top in-demand job for June 2024 were Retail Salespersons, with 429 jobs added. Following were Registered Nurses (372), Truck Drivers (238), Cooks (234), and Food Service related jobs (212). 3 out of the five top occupations were in the Services sector. The top employers for the month of June included McMaster University (533), Hamilton Health Sciences (271), the City of Hamilton (198); St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (167); and AppleOne (148).
